Selangor CNY celebrations go online this year after last year’s successes

PETALING JAYA, Jan 10 — The state government has decided to hold this year’s Chinese New Year celebrations online, similar to what it did last year.

Selangor Buddhist and Taoist special committee chairman Dato’ Teng Chang Khim said the inaugural 2021 Chinese New Year celebrations managed to attract 218,000 viewers from different countries including Singapore, Taiwan, Macau, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Indonesia.

“Seeing as how the Covid-19 pandemic is not yet under control, the state government has decided to conduct the Chinese New Year Special Cultural Celebration 2022 programme on the state level online,” he said during the programme’s launch at Will You Cafe in Oasis Ara Damansara earlier today.

The programme will be broadcasted on online media channels and on social media, and will be hosted on Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari’s Mandarin Facebook page as well as on Teng’s Facebook page at 9pm on February 1, the first day of the festive period.

“This year’s Special Cultural Celebration will see performances from artists across three generations on three events, focusing on those from the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, the early 2000s, and the 2000s.

“The three events will run for an hour and will be hosted by television personality Yoke Chen and popular YouTuber Jym Chong. The programme’s schedule is aimed at attracting viewers of all ages, and to unite all layers of society in celebrating the Chinese New Year,” Teng said.

Among the programme’s highlights include classical festive songs by Chow Kam Leong, Chang Sang Teck and Lee Elaine, a lion dance by the Hong Jing Lion Dance Association of Selangor, a dance performance by Dua Space Dance Theatre, an a capella performance of festive songs by Colour of Voices, and a guzheng (plucked zither) performance by Sara Heng.

Other highlights include a Chinese drums performance by Hands Percussion, an electronic guzheng and LED diabolo performance by Sara Heng and the DiAbolution group, a performance by Lim Wen Suen, a performance by Gaston Pong & JE Pong, and a Chinese New Year speech by members of the Selangor state government meeting council.

“The state government has also composed a Chinese New Year song titled ‘Salam Tahun Baru’, which will be performed by several artists including Chow Kam Leong, Chang Sang Teck, Lim Wen Suen, and Lee Elaine.

“The song’s music video was recorded in the Jenjarom new village, and will be broadcasted on social media after the programme’s launch today,” he said.

Teng added that in light of last year’s successes, viewers are invited to participate in this year’s programme which will feature various contests, and stand a chance to win a RM10,000 ang pau.

“For more information on the programme, please contact Maryani or Nurul ‘Ain at Selangor Invest at 03-5510 2005, or email them at [email protected] and [email protected],” he said.
