Thousands of flood victim children to receive back-to-school aid next month

By Alang Bendahara

SHAH ALAM, Jan 7 — A total of RM4 million has been allocated by the state government to assist school children from families affected by the major flood disaster on December 18 last year, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said the special back-to-school programme for flood victims stands to benefit up to 40,000 school children in all districts affected by the floods.

“The mechanism is being finetuned and Insya-Allah (God willing) in February we will implement it in all the eight districts affected by the floods,” Amirudin said during a special press conference on the post-flood latest update, in the Selangor Economic Action Council (MTES) meeting room at the Selangor State Secretariat Building earlier today.

In the conference, which was live-streamed on Facebook, he said eligible school children will be identified using the list of heads of families given to the state, as well as thorough checks done by state agencies and grassroots leaders including village heads and local council members.

On December 21 last year, the state government allocated RM100 million in funds under the Bantuan Selangor Bangkit initiative, due to the recent heavy floods caused by heavy continuous rain from December 17 to December 19.

Apart from infrastructural recovery, the initiative also covers RM10,000 cash aid to the families of flood victims who perished in the incident.

RM1,000 cash aid will also be provided to the heads of flood victims’ families, to help them restore their homes and cover damages.

The torrential rain resulted in double the rainfall compared to the previous high of 180 millimetres and caused severe flooding in several locations throughout Selangor.

The incident affected almost 40,000 residents, many of who were transferred to 205 temporary relief centres (PPS) in eight districts throughout the state.
