SHAH ALAM, Feb 21 — The hosting of prestigious sporting tournaments such as the recently concluded 2022 Badminton Asia Team Championships (BATC) can help promote Selangor both locally and abroad.

State executive councillor for sports Mohd Khairuddin Othman said it would also help promote sports as well as bring people of different races, religions and cultures together.

“Through the spirit of #SelangorBangkit, it is hoped that the organisation of a prestigious tournament like this (BATC) can further invigorate the spirit of sports and strengthen unity among the people, as well as raise the name of Selangor at the international level,” he said in a statement today.

He said the six-day tournament that started on February 15, has successfully attracted the participation of 147 shuttlers from eight countries.

“The countries that competed in the competition are Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Hong Kong, Singapore, Kazakhstan and Malaysia,” he said.

He also congratulated the national badminton squad for winning the men’s category and the Indonesian for winning the women’s category.

The top four teams (men’s and women’s) in BATC automatically qualify for the 2022 Thomas and Uber Cup finals to be held in Bangkok, Thailand in May.

This is the first time Selangor hosted the BATC which is coordinated by Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS) in collaboration with Badminton Asia and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM).

Mohd Khairuddin also thanked MSNS, RSM, Invest Selangor, Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI, Badminton Asia, BAM, corporate sponsors and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for making the event a success.
