SHAH ALAM, April 7 — Up to 800 Selangor athletes are expected to participate in 31 types of sports in the Malaysian Games (Sukma) 2022 which will be held in Kuala Lumpur from September 29 to October 8.

Selangor State Sports Council (MSN) executive director Mohamad Nizam Marjugi said the actual number will depend on the Sukma Technical Committee’s census, which will only be known after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“Among the conditions of participation is that each type of sport competed must have the involvement of at least eight states. If the participation numbers are insufficient then that sport will not be held.

“For the time being, they are conducting the census and will finalise the number of athletes based on the type of sports to be held,” he told SelangorKini.

Mohamad Nizam added that the state athletes’ performance will be evaluated based on Sukma’s previous records or the national level, as no sports tournament has been organised before.

“For now the athletes are undergoing training as usual, after Tarawih prayers and at the weekend,” he said.

Selangor is aiming to win at least 60 gold medals with third place in Sukma 2022.

The 20th Sukma, which has been postponed for the past two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic will take place in and around Klang Valley.

This edition of the games, known as Sukma XX, MSN 2022, was supported and approved by the Cabinet on February 23 to ensure sports development on a state level.

Sukma’s Supreme Committee meeting also agreed with the resolution to maintain the previously-agreed age limit rules and conditions.
