State forms special fund for sporting events — MB

By Zareef Muzammil

PETALING JAYA, Jan 6 — The special fund that was formed last year to help Selangor in getting ready for national and international sporting events has so far received millions of ringgit, says Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said.

He said the state and Federal governments and private entities had contributed to the fund.

“Previously, circa 2016 and 2017, we hosted the Team Table Tennis Championship and last year, we organised the Badminton Asia Team Championship in Setia Alam.

“When I was the state executive councillor for sports in 2016, we took part in organising the Malaysia Open Badminton Championship despite without a dedicated fund like the one we currently have.

“Through the fund, we could provide some allocation to organise any sporting events in the future. We are ready because we have a lot of facilities to organise the events,” he told a press conference after launching the 2023 Selangor International Junior Golf Championship at Seri Selangor Golf Club, here yesterday.

A total of 105 teenage players aged between 12 to 18 years took part in the championship, which started yesterday and until January 8.

The championship, organised by the UUM International School Melaka in collaboration with the Malaysian Golf Association, saw participation from local and foreign players including South Korea, Singapore, the Philippines and Indonesia.
