State to discuss SOPs for campsite activities next week

By Suhaila Shahrul Annuar

KAJANG, Jan 5 — Standard operating procedures (SOP) relating to campsite activities including luxury or stylish camping (glamping) in Selangor will be discussed next week, said the state executive councillor for tourism Hee Loy Sian

He said the discussion would involve various parties including the Selangor State Economic Planning Unit (Upen) and the state’s local authorities.

“Next week, Upen and the parties involved, including local authorities, will discuss SOPs for camping or glamping in forest reserves or common lands (Selangor state).

“We will issue SOPs and in the future, glamping or campsites (would possibly) not only need to apply for permits but also need to make payments because we see this as a profitable business,” he said when met after surveying issues related to a quarry in Mahkota Cheras, here today.

Hee said the SOP is to ensure there are guidelines regarding the activity in the state.

“There is no enforcement, SOP or guidelines for them (currently). On common (private) lands, setting up tents (preparing a camping site) for profit purposes is geared towards being a business.

“So, we need to collect license fees from them and make sure that the SOP issued will ensure that this (landslide incident involving the loss of life in Batang Kali) will not happen in the future,” he said.

The landslide tragedy at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali on December 16, 2022 claimed 31 lives with 12 of them being children and a one-year-old baby boy while 61 victims survived.
