DID makes adjustments to PLSB project to reduce flood impact — Minister

KOTA BHARU, Feb 20 — The Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) has made adjustments to the Phase 1 of the Sungai Golok Integrated River Basin Development (PLSB) project which is currently under construction to reduce the impact of flooding on the surrounding area.

Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the adjustments involved a number of technical matters, including making sure that water can flow better from Sungai Lanchang to Sungai Golok.

He said the adjustments were made after taking into account the views of the nearby villagers, who have been dealing with the flood problem ever since the project began.

“We must also keep in mind that this project is not yet completed, so there are several things that have been raised. Adjustments have been made based on the views of the residents.

“The DID has made some adjustments to at least overcome the problem in Kampung Tersang and the surrounding area,” he said after a meeting with members of the Kelantan Darul Naim Media Club (Kemudi), here last night.

Phase 1 of the PLSB project is downstream of the Sungai Golok basin in the Tumpat district and partly in the Pasir Mas district, with a total allocation of RM656 million.

The project aims to resolve the problem of flash floods and major floods in the area in the future.
