Johor post-flood mission successfully removes 765 tonnes of bulk waste in Segamat — MB

KUALA LUMPUR, March 10 — The Bantuan Kita Selangor Penyayang mission that was mobilised on Wednesday has successfully removed a total of 765 tonnes of flood bulk wastes in Segamat, Johor, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said in addition to cleaning the area, the voluntary services of over 300 members from the local authorities, Selangor Volunteers (serve), Team Selangor and KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) provided moral support to the victims.

“Based on our experience with dealing with floods, if we solve the garbage problem, it can facilitate other processes, including emotional and physical aspects.

“Imagine if we (the victims) return home to see garbage piled up, it causes long-term trauma in addition to illnesses.

“Garbage invites pests like rats. This can lead to infectious diseases,” he said during the 2023 Selangor International Halal Conference (Selhac) press conference today.

The post-flood relief mission moved to Segamat on Wednesday until today to focus on clearing bulk waste dumps from nine settlements that were badly affected by the disaster earlier this month.

On March 4, the first phase of the aid mission included food, hygiene kits, disposable diapers and daily necessities that were sent to a storage depot in Muar to help flood victims.
