Dewan Rakyat Speaker to attend 44th Asean-AIPA in Indonesia

KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Johari Abdul will attend the 44th Asean Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia from tomorrow to May 12.

The Parliament said in a statement today that the assembly was an important platform for dialog and cooperation between Asean leaders and AIPA members that takes place in conjunction with the Asean Summit.

“This year’s assembly will be chaired by Speaker of Indonesia’s People’s Representative Council, Maharani Nakshatra Kusyala Devi, the first Indonesian woman Speaker.

“Asean-AIPA is a medium where Asean MPs can exchange views relating to economic, social, and political issues and craft strategies to tackle them,” the statement read.

Malaysia’s involvement in the 44th Asean -AIPA would strengthen international cooperation and multilateralism, in terms of active dialogue to resolve critical issues in Asean.

Johari also said that the country’s participation reflected its determination to foster close ties with fellow Asean members in increasing accountability, crafting comprehensive policies, and drive more public involvement efforts and regional understanding to build an ASEAN community that is more resilient, competitive and prosperous.

He is scheduled to meet with Indonesian vice-president Ma’ruf Amin and Maharani.
