SHAH ALAM, June 19 — Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari has expressed his confidence that Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) and their Unity Government allies would be able to secure at least a two-thirds majority in the upcoming state election.

In a special press conference today marking the fifth anniversary of his five-year term, Amirudin said he anticipates that the ruling coalition would be able to win more than 50 out of the 56 state seats.

“The voters are ultimately the kingmakers but we are confident because in the next few days, we will discuss strategies with Harapan state leaders and our allies in the Unity Government.

“With these new partners, we can replicate our performance in 2018 and potentially win more than 50 seats in the upcoming state election,” said Amirudin.

The Sungai Tua state assemblyman further stated that his confidence stems from his administration’s performance over the past five years, dealing with a range of economic, political, and social crises resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic and the infamous Sheraton Move, which led to the collapse of the Harapan federal government in 2020.

“I am also confident based on this administration’s track record where we have addressed various issues, regardless of their nature, instead of sweeping them under the rug,” he said.

Earlier today, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, consented to the dissolution of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly effective Friday (June 23) to pave the way for state polls.

During the period between the dissolution and the formation of the new state government, Amirudin said the state administration will serve as the caretaker government as per convention.

He said that during this period, no new policies can be announced but clarified that the state administration is well within its rights to continue with existing and previously approved programmes or projects.

He further elaborated that, to uphold good governance, his administration thoroughly discussed over 450 state matters concerning issues such as project approvals and land statuses during the recent State Executive Council meeting.

“This is to ensure that these issues are resolved through due process before the state election commences. It would be irresponsible if we delayed these matters over two months as it would affect revenue collection for the state,” said Amirudin.
