SEPANG, June 11 — The construction of homes for the Orang Asli community, via a RM1 million allocation by the State Government this year, is expected to begin this month.

Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI’s corporate social responsibility head Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the final process to appoint contractors is currently underway.

“MBI, as the implementing agency for the assistance, will monitor and appoint contractors for the construction works.

“Currently we are at the final stage of contractor appointment via the tender process, after which we will proceed with the construction,” he said.

Ahmad Azri was speaking at a press conference following the meeting with the Sepang district sports contingent to the 2023 Selangor and Federal Territory Karnival Sukan Orang Asli yesterday.

Also in attendance was the state executive councillor for Orang Asli affairs Hee Loy Sian.

Ahmad Azri said the project is mainly focused on new construction works, with an estimated RM30,000 to RM40,000 per house.

“Some may require a larger amount due to factors like access to the houses via winding roads deep into the forest, which involves relatively high costs,” he said.

During the 2023 Selangor Budget tabled on November 25 last year, RM1 million was allocated to provide comfortable and safe housing for the Orang Asli community through both renovation and new construction projects.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the project is aimed at fulfilling the dreams of all segments of society in the state.

Meanwhile, MBI also contributed RM5,000 to the Sepang district Orang Asli contingent in support of their community sports development agenda.

Ahmad Azri said the funds are meant for the contingent’s participation in the 2023 Selangor and Federal Territory Karnival Sukan Orang Asli, which commences today.

“This contribution will help to cover various costs including training, transportation, and purchasing attire.

“MBI is constantly proactive in assisting the Orang Asli community and is always ready to provide support for any requests which we can assist, including for education and housing,” he said.

Sepang Orang Asli Development Department officer Mohamed Rasaki Abdul Majid said this year’s participation differs from previous years, as the athletes were able to undergo training this time round.

“Previously, Sepang district’s participation usually did not include prior training and preparations before the event.

“But for this year we changed the concept, and with the state government’s support and assistance, Sepang’s Orang Asli athletes could undergo centralised training with coaches and have a better understanding of the latest sports rules and regulations,” he said.
