State polls: Harapan to name candidates who are credible, back Unity Government

KLANG, June 26 — Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) and Barisan Nasional (BN) state election candidates who are selected must be among those who support the Unity Government, as part of a winning formula in facing the upcoming polls.

This is according to Selangor Harapan chairman Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, who said candidates would also be nominated based on their credibility and winnability.

“Winning formula means that all candidates must portray credibility and show a basis of support for the parties cooperating under the Unity Government.

“Certainly we will try to select (winnable candidates), because we want to win the election. We head into the poll as an incumbent and we have a good track record in the (Selangor) administration.”

He said this after launching the Harapan and BN election machinery for the Sungai Kandis state constituency ahead of the upcoming Selangor election, in conjunction with the #arusmerahkuning tour, at the Tapak Rakan Muda Taman Sri Andalas, here, last night.

With the 15-year history of the Harapan administration in Selangor, Amirudin said he is convinced voters would be rational enough to stick with the coalition come polling day.

“To add to that, we also have some of our friends from BN who have experience in the administration. So, this combination is a good combination that can ensure stability, particularly at a time of such significance as we strive for economic recovery.”

On a separate note, Amirudin said the process of seat distribution between Harapan and BN for Selangor is expected to be completed after Hari Raya Aidiladha.

“There are only one or two seats remaining. I believe (Harapan chairman) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has already conducted meetings with Umno president (Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi), and that there have been improvements in the seat negotiations.

Selangor is one of six states that will be conducting elections within the next couple of months, the others being Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.

The Selangor legislative assembly was dissolved last Friday after receiving the consent of state ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj.
