Asean foreign ministers recognise vital role of AICHR in Asean community building

JAKARTA, July 11 — Asean Foreign ministers reaffirmed their support for the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights’ (AICHR) endeavours in the promotion and protection of human rights in the region, and Asean Community-building.

The Asean Secretariat in a statement said the matter was highlighted during the Asean Foreign Ministers Interface Meeting with the representatives of AICHR, which was attended by Secretary-General of Asean Kao Kim Hourn on Tuesday.

“AICHR also delivered its statement and submitted the Annual Report of AICHR 2023 to the 56th Asean Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM),” the statement said.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Datuk Seri Zambry Abd Kadir is leading the Malaysian delegation to the 56th AMM and Related Meetings, from Tuesday to Friday (July 11 to July 14), in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Malaysia’s Permanent Representative to Asean, Nur Izzah Wong Mee Choo, stated that Zambry will also participate in the Post-Ministerial Conferences (PMC) with each of the 11 Asean dialogue partner countries.

Other programmes include the 24th Asean Plus Three Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (APT FMM); the 13th East Asia Summit Foreign Ministers’ Meeting; the Southeast Asia Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ) Commission Meeting; AICHR; and the 30th Asean Regional Forum (ARF).

The matters to be discussed include the progress of Asean community development, priorities and key outcomes of Asean under the Asean Chairmanship by Indonesia, implementation of cooperation under the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) policy, and regional and international issues of common interest.

Zambry is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with several counterparts from the attending countries at the 56th AMM to strengthen bilateral relations and foster shared understanding among world leaders on regional and global issues of common interest.
