SHAH ALAM, July 25 — The various achievements scored by the Selangor Pakatan Harapan (Harapan) government since taking over the state in 2008 has helped build the people’s confidence in the administration.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari noted that the state has seen various achievements under Harapan’s leadership, such as becoming the largest contributor to the country’s gross domestic product and introducing the First Selangor Plan.

He said the state was able to record these achievements and ensure stability despite facing multiple challenges, like the Covid-19 pandemic and massive flooding in 2021.

“I don’t want to speak about my position, but what’s important is the level of people’s confidence in the state government. I believe 71 per cent of the rakyat feel we are on the right track.

“I believe with our strength and contribution to the state, the majority of the people have high confidence in the administration,” he said during a town hall session here last night.

Amirudin expressed confidence that the various initiatives introduced by the state Harapan administration over the past three terms will convince the public to vote for the coalition come the election on August 12.

“I don’t think Malaysians want to return to a state of political instability,” he said, ostensibly referring to the 2020 Sheraton Move that led to the collapse of the then federal government.

“This (election) is the best opportunity to fix the situation, and we need a major reconciliation (among parties), particularly after the state polls.”

The state Harapan chairman said the people of Selangor have responded positively to the possibility of a Harapan-Barisan Nasional (BN) unity government in the state.

However, he said the coalition must not rest on its laurels ahead of the election.

Meanwhile, Amirudin said under his watch, the state administration has placed greater emphasis on teamwork and willingness to listen to suggestions and feedback from various quarters.

This, he noted, has helped ensure stability and reduce the political temperature here.

“In my first meeting with executive councillors and state civil servants, I stressed the importance of teamwork. I also emphasised the need to understand and complement one another, as well as to have a willingness to learn.

“The concept of musyawarah (collaborative decision-making) has allowed various issues to be addressed accordingly, although sometimes, there are matters that may not be agreed upon by all. But in the end, consensus helps.”
