Rafizi says MTEN to view progressive wage model on Aug 7

PUTRAJAYA, July 28 — A progressive salary model will be presented to the National Economic Action Council (MTEN) on August 7 for approval before it can be implemented, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli said.

Several main thrusts of the policy will be announced following the approval, he said, adding that discussions between ministries have been finalised.

“I’m convinced employers will also be happy when the policy or model is approved and announced, as both employees and employers will embrace the suggested progressive salary model,” he told the media after announcing the 2022 Household Income and Expenditure Survey Report here today.

The suggestions initially considered included tabling a white paper on salary status at Parliament in September and starting engagement sessions and discussions between employers and employees, he said.

He also said the government is confident that employers’ concerns about higher operating costs can be addressed and overcome.

Rafizi was reported earlier as saying a progressive salary policy would be jointly developed by the Economy Ministry, Finance Ministry, Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry and Human Resources Ministry, and would facilitate a switch from a minimum wage model to phased salary increments in line with national economic growth.
