Quick action by Luas to resolve murky water in Sungai Selangor

By Sofia Nasir

SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (Luas) addressed the high turbidity issue in Sungai Selangor on Saturday (August 12).

State executive councillor for the Hee Loy Sian said Luas promptly activated the release of water from the Hybrid Off River Augmentation Storage (Horas) 600 and the alternative water source ponds in Bestari Jaya.

As a result, the total daily water release rose to 900 million litres, and was aimed at increasing the clarification rate in Sungai Selangor.

“Simultaneously, two gates at the Bestari Jaya Dam were opened to expedite the clarification process and to allow the murky water to flow downstream into Sungai Selangor.

“Starting at 5:55pm on Saturday, Sungai Selangor’s turbidity reading dropped below 1000 NTU (nephelometric turbidity units), and it is expected to continue decreasing until it reaches a normal reading,” he said in a media statement yesterday.

Hee added the high turbidity, reaching up to 6,000 NTU in Sungai Selangor, was detected by Luas around 10:30am on Saturday.

The incident was believed to have been caused by the increased water flow that led to soil erosion in the upstream area of the Sungai Kerling channel in the Gading Forest Reserve, Hulu Selangor.

“Luas will continue to monitor the site until the turbidity issue is resolved and the condition of Sungai Selangor returns to normal,” he said.
