Rahmat Mohamad no longer Suhakam chief from Aug 31

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 29 — Legal and human rights expert Prof Datuk Rahmat Mohamad will step down as chairman of the Malaysian Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) on August 31, said the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department.

The division in a statement yesterday said the government will appoint an interim chief until a new chairman is appointed with the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The division said Rahmat, who was made Suhakam chief on June 22, 2022, was appointed to chair the Asian International Arbitration Center Advisory Board on August 23.

“Since his appointment, Rahmat has implemented various initiatives in Suhakam, including the success of the debate session on the commission’s annual report and financial statement for the year 2020 in the Dewan Rakyat on June 12 to 14,” said the division in the statement.

The Legal Affairs Division said Rahmat’s background in international law and his experience as Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation secretary-general informed his appointment to the arbitration board.
