KLANG, Aug 3 — The Johan Setia area will be developed into an agro-tourism centre which can benefit over 150 farmers and residents in the vicinity by generating income from agricultural sales.

Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Sungai Kandis, Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, said the 1,000-acre area will also include a square to house the economic planning centre.

“We are aiming to realise the dreams of farmers and residents around here in generating income via their agricultural produce by creating an economic activity centre.

“The plan also includes providing sites to sell agricultural produce, food truck stalls, and pasar malam,” he said when met yesterday.

Johan Setia is the second-largest food supplier in Selangor after Ulu Yam and part of the area has been declared by the Klang Municipal Council as the Green Revolution zone until 2033.

Meanwhile, Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for Paya Jaras has proposed the establishment of a special cooperative for the welfare of Qu’ran and Fardu Ain (Kafa) teachers and their Department of Social Welfare (Kemas) counterparts.

Mohd Khairuddin Othman said the cooperative’s revenue will be generated through cultivating chilli plants on a quarter-acre of land in Kampung Kubu Gajah, which can earn a monthly profit of up to RM12,000.

“In several instances, I have suggested a cooperative be formed for Kafa and Kemas teachers, which can generate income and empower their welfare.

“In light of this, I will request the Rural Development Institute for a piece of land to be managed with crops like chilli, and the income earned will be channelled back to the cooperative,” he said.

Mohd Zawawi will be facing off against Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) Wan Dzahanurin Ahmad and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance’s Afriena Shaqira, while Mohd Khairuddin will contend with PN’s Datuk Halim Tamuri and Independent candidate Sifu Linda.

The Election Commission has set August 8 as the early voting date, with polling on August 12.
