Tabung Haji  donates RM500,000 to assist 500 asnaf SPM students

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has contributed RM500,000 to assist 500 hardcore poor asnaf (tithe recipient) students nationwide to prepare for next year’s Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.

TH group managing director and chief executive officer Syed Hamadah Syed Othman said the donation was channelled through the Iqra’ TH Plus programme to Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa, which is a body under the National Unity Ministry.

The programme, he said, would involve university students as volunteers for the implementation of the SPM intensive tuition programme.

“The Iqra’ TH Plus programme is a TH initiative carried out for the first time this year to assist students to improve their academic performance, besides helping to ease their financial burden.

“Hopefully, this contribution will encourage and motivate the students to continue to strive for excellence in the academic field so that it will become a catalyst for change in improving their socio-economic level as that of their families and communities and subsequently the future of the country.”

According to Syed Hamadah, the programme will target students from rural communities in Johor, Selangor, Penang, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan.

The intensive tuition programme, he said, will focus on six core SPM subjects, namely Bahasa Melayu, English, Mathematics, Science, History and Islamic Studies.

TH Corporate Communications general manager Ahmad Shahriman Johari presented the contribution to Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa chief executive officer Wong Kin Lun on Sunday (Aug 13) and it was witnessed by Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.
