SHAH ALAM, Sept 19 — The state’s halal industry is expected to grow by a healthy 15 per cent this year, boosted by the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions, said Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated), or MBI.
Its chief operating officer Saipolyazan Yusop was quoted by The Star as saying there will be growing demand for halal products and services across several sectors.
“Selangor is well-positioned to capitalise on it,” he said at the 19th Malaysia International Halal Showcase (Mihas 2023), which was recently held at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre in Kuala Lumpur from September 12 to 15.
At the event, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state government will assist local entrepreneurs to obtain halal certification and register their businesses.
Although the issuance of such certificates is under the jurisdiction of the Malaysian Islamic Development Department, Amirudin said the Selangor Islamic Religious Department is lending a hand to process the applications.
“Various programmes have been carried out to enhance awareness among industry players of the procedures involved,” he said after launching the Selangor Pavilion at Mihas 2023.
Amirudin said Selangor recorded RM55.7 million in value from various business-matching programmes in the halal industry last year — a 40 per cent increase from the previous year.
MBI is promoting local offerings in the halal industry via its subsidiary HIS Toyyiba Sdn Bhd.
This is the second time MBI, representing the state government, is taking part in the annual halal industry exhibition.
The four-day event featured 24 booths by state-owned companies and enterprises, as well as 1,890 booths set up by local and international businesses.
