Exco: Selangor to expand melon farming, crayfish breeding initiatives

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

SHAH ALAM, Oct 31 – The state government plans to expand its melon farming and crayfish breeding initiatives next year following positive response from the public.

State executive councillor for agriculture Izham Hashim said the effort will not only boost production but also help increase local entrepreneurs’ income.

“At the state level, we conducted a test and we can see that the melon and crayfish businesses have the potential for growth.

“Not only that, one of the melon seeds we produced also had very high demand, with prices ranging between RM15 to RM25 per kilogram,” he told reporters during the Agro Selangor 2022 programme at Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS) building, here, yesterday.

Last year, Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched five new crop seeds at the Selangor Fruit Valley (SFV).

The seeds include two types of melon (crunchy and sweet), two types of corn (grain and sweet) and papaya produced by Green World Genetics Sdn Bhd.

Her Royal Highness also had the privilege of choosing the names for the crops, including Melon Selangor for the crunchy melon and Selangor Sweet Melon for the sweet version.
