No panic buying please, help us ensure sufficient rice supply, pleads exco

SHAH ALAM, Oct 3 – In response to the recent concerns regarding rice shortages, Selangor executive councillor for consumer affairs Datuk Rizam Ismail has assured the public of adequate rice supply for all.

He said the state government has also implemented various initiatives to keep prices of local white rice low, such as providing discounts on the product until the end of the year.

In this regard, he appealed to the public to make ethical purchasing decisions and avoid panic buying that could disrupt supply.

“We need the public’s cooperation to ensure a steady rice supply for everyone,” he told the Selangor Journal today.

“While we are taking measures to ensure availability, we urge our residents not to hoard supplies or engage in panic buying.”

Rizam’s comment comes in the wake of rising concerns over recent spikes in imported rice prices, which has led to a noticeable shortage of locally produced rice in many parts of the country.

This is as consumers, who have traditionally purchased imported rice, are now turning to local products.

In an effort to ensure rice remains affordable, the state government launched an initiative last month to offer 5kg packs at RM13 each.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari had said, on September 21, that the initiative would be facilitated through the Selangor Agricultural Development Corporation (PKPS).

Residents can avail themselves of this offer at the four PKPS outlets statewide, as well as via its mobile sales units which will operate at three different locations daily until December 2023.

Amirudin added that the state government has also set up a Selangor Paddy and Rice Regulatory Authority (KSPDS) to monitor and handle issues of stock shortages.
