Selangor commits to green infrastructure in upcoming state budget — MB

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, Oct 24 – Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari hopes the state government can improve its waste management systems to fully process up to eight tonnes of garbage daily via waste-to-energy (WTE) projects.

Referring to one of the key frameworks of the Madani Economy, the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030), he emphasised that Selangor is committed to shifting toward green infrastructure.

The commitment will be effectively fulfilled in the upcoming 2024 Selangor Budget, which will be tabled during the State Legislative Assembly on November 10.

“Our primary goal in the coming years is to achieve comprehensive management of all our garbage, amounting to seven to eight tonnes, by shifting to WTE solutions, eliminating the need for landfills.

“I believe the goal should be reevaluated to make it more achievable and able to accomplish effectively,” he said during the budget’s town hall session with the Investment, Trade, and Industry Ministry.

Also present was Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

Among the objectives outlined in the NIMP 2030 is promoting green manufacturing practices and transitioning towards net-zero emissions.

This strategic direction positions Malaysia in the lead for sustainable solutions and developing emerging growth sectors.

Earlier in his opening remarks, Amirudin provided an update on Selangor’s ongoing plans and projects, highlighting its efforts in developing the energy industry.

One noteworthy project in progress is the Pulau Indah Power Plant, which is expected to be fully operational by January next year.

Meanwhile, he said the town hall session with Miti aims to assist the state government in developing a more robust state budget, where the feedback, ideas, and proposals received would also help readjust some of the state policies to achieve the Smart State status by 2025.

“This session also allows us to address what is presented in the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) towards a developed and advanced liveable state.

“Hopefully, we can achieve fiscal goals for the coming year through this dialogue in the last few days before our budget is finalised, especially in the industrial and economic sectors,” Amirudin said.

He added the aligned direction between the Federal and state governments would support Selangor’s efforts in strengthening the economy and achieving its goal of becoming an Asean gateway.

“We can strengthen state programmes, like SIBS (Selangor International Business Summit). We started well, with speakers from Thailand. We hope in the future, we can have ministers and foreign prime ministers from Singapore and Thailand (to speak at the event).

“Invest Selangor Bhd needs to cooperate with Miti to attract more parties,” Amirudin said.

The recent annual summit event, which lasted four days and ended on Sunday (October 22), recorded an unofficial transaction value in investments exceeding RM4 billion, exceeding the RM1.5 billion target, and drawing about 50,000 visitors.

The global trade summit featured six main segments and saw the participation of international industry players from China, Indonesia, Japan, Uganda, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Korea, Turkey, Kenya, and Australia.
