PM Anwar urges tolerance to combat racial, religious extremism

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called on the leaders of the Unity Government to maintain the spirit of tolerance in the face of rising racial and religious extremism.

This call comes amid growing concerns across the nation’s diverse communities, and in response to accusations from the Perikatan Nasional Opposition bloc, which frequently alleges the government is failing to safeguard Malay-Muslim rights.

In his policy speech at Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s National Congress as the party president, he firmly stated the government’s unwavering stance against the manipulation of race and religion for divisive purposes.

“As long as we are in power, we will strongly resist any forces that attempt to exploit Malaysia under the guise of race and religion,” said Anwar at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre yesterday evening.

He stressed the fallout from such issues is not confined to the Malay-Muslim community but affects all citizens, regardless of religious affiliation.

Anwar also addressed concerns about the Malay language and regional sentiments, highlighting a minority group’s queries regarding the Malay language’s promotion and criticism of certain national policies, including Article 153 of the Federal Constitution.

Turning to political dynamics, the Prime Minister expressed disappointment with the Opposition’s portrayal of DAP as a threat and challenge to the administration of Islam.

He refuted such claims, noting, “I have never once heard that DAP has opposed programmes meant for Malay Muslims.

“While representatives of different communities, like the Indian or Chinese, may express their concerns, that is entirely normal,” Anwar said.

He then guaranteed that the Unity Government was formed with the support and loyalty of its allies.

Recognizing this, Anwar pledged continued efforts to strengthen these cooperative relationships, reinforcing the government’s commitment to unity and mutual respect across Malaysia’s diverse societal landscape.
