SHAH ALAM, Nov 29 — The Selangor Climate Change Action Council will soon be upgraded into a Centre for Climate Change Adaptation as the state government looks to pay more serious attention to the existential threat.

State executive councillor for the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the centre, which will cost RM800,000, will draw up strategic measures to address the climate change issue.

It will primarily focus on nine key sectors, including water sources, agriculture, health, land use, waste management, and transportation.

Other factors which will be considered are the impact of climate change on the forestry and biodiversity sectors, industry, as well as infrastructure, energy, and environment.

“The decision (to set up the centre) was made after the state government recognised that this issue requires serious attention. Therefore, there is a need to establish a centre which functions to formulate strategic plans.

“It will also serve as a leading agency for the development of green technology, carbon market management, assessment of private environmental and green technology-related project proposals, as well as research and development,” she told SelangorKini.

This year, RM300,000 has been allocated for the Selangor Climate Change Policy and to conduct relevant studies to develop comprehensive measures to combat climate change.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the state takes a serious view of climate change and extreme weather, which can lead to floods, landslides, as well as other emerging threats like heatwaves, rising sea levels, and biodiversity loss.
