Middle-aged workers less cognisant of govt aid than senior citizens, says rep

SHAH ALAM, Dec 21 — Kampung Tunku assemblyman Lim Yi Wei has vowed to intensify efforts to get more low-income residents in her constituency to register for state government assistance programmes, particularly among the middle-aged group.

This is after she realised that working class individuals aged 30 to 50 appear to be less aware of the state’s Iltizam Selangor Penyayang (ISP) initiatives compared to senior citizens and retirees.

“Senior citizens in Kampung Tunku are more cognizant of developments pertaining to aid schemes offered by the state. When there are announcements on social media, they would promptly apply (for the aid) at the community service centre.”

“Working individuals, on the other hand, do not have the time to register or explore the various ISP assistance as they are busy with their jobs. Therefore, it is one of the goals of our service centre to ensure this group registers,” she said.

According to data from the Statistics Department, 58.5 per cent of 54,891 residents in Kampung Tunku are categorised under the working age (15 to 64 years), while old age (65 and above) and young age (0 to 14 years) are respectively make up 19.2 per cent and 22.3 per cent of the population.

The Selangor government allocates approximately RM600 million a year to implement over 40 aid packages under ISP to ensure the welfare of its citizens.

These programmes benefit various groups in the community, including children, women, students, disabled individuals, farmers and small businesses, encompassing various fields like health, education, housing and entrepreneurship.
