Mother pleads not guilty to fatal child neglect

PETALING JAYA, Dec 22 — The mother of a two-year-old girl, who died after she was left in a car last month, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court today to a charge of negligence.

The 38-year-old trader claimed trial after the charge was read to her before Judge Syahliza Warnoh.

She was accused of committing the offence in front of a house at Jalan PJU 1A/25, Ara Damansara, between 8am and 3.15pm on November 8.

The accused is charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which provides for a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment of up to 20 years, or both upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Hakimah Ibrahim suggested that the court set bail at RM15,000 in one surety.

Lawyer Datuk Hanif Hassan appealed for leniency because his client had given her full cooperation during the case investigation.

“Since the incident, she has also suffered trauma,” he said.

Syahliza allowed the accused bail of RM7,000 in one surety and required her to report to the nearest police station once a month and to avoid harassing the witness.

She set January 30 for mention of the case.
