Documents on Malaysia’s climate strategy in final phase — Minister

By Yasmin Ramlan

SHAH ALAM, Mar 13 — The Federal government is currently in the process of finalising two crucial documents relating to climate change mitigation and adaptation plan.

They are the Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy (LT-LEDS) and the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) Roadmap and Action Plan under the Paris Agreement.

In a written parliamentary reply, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the preparation of the documents require a total cost of over RM2.68 million, with funds allocated under the Malaysia Plan.

“To date, the cost that has been paid to consultants for the NDC and LT-LEDS projects is RM1,533,765.18,” he said.

He was responding to a question from Kubang Kerian MP Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man regarding the total amount spent by the government for climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

According to the minister, the two documents will outline the climate change mitigation actions necessary for Malaysia to achieve the greenhouse gas reduction target set under the Paris Agreement.

Simultaneously, Nik Nazmi said his ministry is currently in the early stages of developing the National Adaptation Plan (NAP), which will outline the country’s long-term climate change adaptation actions.

He noted that RM158,700 has been spent from the third quarter of 2023 to the first quarter of this year to implement the initial scope of the NAP development.

On December 2, when speaking at the Asean Leadership in Addressing Climate Change forum in Dubai, Nik Nazmi had emphasised that both LT-LEDS and the NDC Roadmap and Action Plan will serve as a comprehensive guideline for the country towards achieving net-zero emissions as early as 2050.

He said among Malaysia’s key priorities is the drafting of a climate change bill, establishment of a national adaptation fund and development of a carbon market mechanism.
