Fire Dept expands fire brigade programme to private college, uni students

HULU LANGAT, April 28 — The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is expanding its Fire Brigade programme to include students from private institutions of higher learning (IHL) to empower the citizen life-saver community.

Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department (Training Division) director Datuk Norazam Khamis said nine public and one private institution have joined the programme, which was introduced in 2021. Over 500 students have successfully completed the training.

He said Saito University College is the first private college to join the Fire Brigade, marking the first step in expanding the programme to other private institutions.

“We aim to expand this programme within the next two years, and many private institutions are expected to join the Fire Brigade,” he told Bernama after the Fire Brigade accreditation ceremony at Saito University College today.

Also present were Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Rozihan Anwar Mamat and Saito University College operations director Zahar Ali.

Norazam added that students enrolled in the programme will undergo a dedicated one-year training by JBPM, aimed at equipping them with essential firefighting skills, covering initial emergency response protocols and hands-on field exercises alongside firefighters.

“The knowledge they acquire can be applied in daily life and shared with family members as well in emergency situations, especially fire and rescue processes.

“This also provides career opportunities for students if they choose to do so and meets the qualifications set to become firefighters,” he said.

38 students from Saito University, majoring in Law Enforcement, completed the 2024 Fire Brigade training, with Nur Aina Al Hikmah Ahmad being crowned the overall best participant.
