SHAH ALAM, May 6 — Selangor welcomed 6.54 million tourists last year, surpassing its target of 5 million annual visitors.

The figure represents a 46.4 per cent increase from 2022’s 4.46 million tourist inflow. In 2021, Selangor recorded 3.19 million visitors.

In a statement, Tourism Selangor Sdn Bhd said of last year’s figure, 4.45 million were domestic tourists, while 2.09 million were international travellers.

“This exceptional growth underscores Selangor’s appeal as a premier tourist destination,” the state tourism agency said today.

“It highlights the effectiveness of strategic initiatives aimed at promoting the state’s tourism segmentation from ecotourism to theme parks, food tourism heritage and culture.”

Tourism Selangor revealed that China, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and India remain the top five international tourist markets for Selangor, contributing 46 per cent of international visitors to the state.

On the domestic front, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Perak, Pahang and Penang comprised the top tourist market, comprising 36 per cent of the overall arrivals.

“Among the 12 local municipal councils in Selangor, the Subang Jaya City Council received the highest tourist influx, welcoming 2.15 million visitors.

“Notably, the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council recorded the highest increase, with a staggering 358 per cent rise from 16,920 tourists in 2022 to 77,521 last year. This shows the diverse and growing appeal of Selangor’s tourism offerings.”

Tourism Selangor said the data provided was based on the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s criteria, which defines tourists as individuals whose trips include an overnight stay.

The impressive number of tourist arrivals last year is a welcome development for the state ahead of the Visit Selangor Year 2025.

The state government has set a target of 7 million tourist arrivals next year in conjunction with the year-long campaign.

“Tourism industry players and tourists can anticipate exciting new tourism developments and unparalleled travelling experience in Selangor for the years ahead,” the agency said.
