WHO reports critical malnutrition among Gazan kids amid severe food shortages

AMMAN, June 13 — The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that more than 8,000 children aged under five in the Gaza Strip have been treated for acute malnutrition, including 1,600 suffering from severe acute malnutrition, resulting in 28 deaths, Jordan News Agency reported.

During a press conference in Geneva yesterday, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained a large segment of the population of the Gaza Strip, devastated by the Israeli war, is facing a catastrophic level of food shortages and near-famine conditions.

He said although there is information indicating an increase in food deliveries, there is no evidence that those most in need are receiving sufficient quantities of food of adequate quality.

Israel has been conducting military operations in the Gaza Strip as a response to the attack on its territory by Palestinian movement Hamas on October 7, 2023.

Over 37,000 Palestinians have been killed so far by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local authorities.

Israel stands accused of genocide at the International Court of Justice, whose latest ruling ordered Tel Aviv to immediately halt its operation in Rafah, the southern part of the Gaza Strip, where over a million Palestinians sought refuge from the war.
