AUG 2024: Malaysia place four representatives in badminton individual finals

SURABAYA, July 1 — Four Malaysian representatives have qualified for individual event finals at the Asean University Games (AUG) 2024 today.

In the men’s singles semi-finals at the Graha Cakrawala Convention Hall of Universitas Malang, Malaysia’s Hooi Shao Herng defeated Thailand’s Arree Puritat 21-19, 16-21, 21-13.

In tomorrow’s final, Hooi will take on top seed Pusri Nachakorn of Thailand.

Also through to the final is men’s doubles pair Wong Tien Ci-Liew Xin, who ousted Thailand’s Mangkornloi-Promsarin Paramet 23-21, 21-19 today and will next play host pair Elgiffani Muhammad Juan-Purnama Riza Dwicahya.

Women’s doubles pair Valeree Siow Zi Xuan-Lee Xin Jie also kept the Malaysian flag flying by beating second seeds Pattaraporn Rungruengpramon-Pichampn Phatcharaphisut of Thailand 21-15, 21-17.

Awaiting them in the final are Thailand’s Atitaya Pavonan-Chasinee Korepap.

Malaysia will also be represented in the mixed doubles final, where Wee Yee Hern-Ng Qi Xuan will meet Indonesia’s Muhammad Juan Elgiffani-Elizabeth Jovita after ousting another Indonesian pair, Hafidz Gerardo Rizqullah-Nadia Tryola, 21-10, 21-18 in the semi-finals.

National head coach Datuk Abdul Rashid Mohd Sidek said the badminton squad had achieved their target by qualifying for four finals.

“The only sore point was women’s singles. We will try our best to win as many gold medals as possible,” he said.
