Harapan-BN cooperation in Sg Bakap polls strongest yet — Nik Nazmi

NIBONG TEBAL, July 1 — The Pakatan Harapan-Barisan Nasional (Harapan-BN) machinery for the Sungai Bakap by-election is at its strongest yet since both blocs became part of the Unity Government, said PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

He said the pact has made a significant impact, with many programmes organised by Harapan-BN receiving good response from the locals.

“Since forming the Unity Government, this is the closest cooperation we have had. God willing, this will help us (Harapan) as we near polling day,” he told reporters after inaugurating the Durian and Local Fruits Festival organised by the Penang State Agriculture Department in Sungai Jawi here today.

With six days left in the campaign period, Nik Nazmi, who is also the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, said efforts to communicate the government’s policies and specific offers for Sungai Bakap residents will continue.

“We, unlike the opposition, do not play on sentiments by bringing national issues here. The residents here want solutions to the problems they have been facing, which the opposition has not been able to offer,” he said.

The July 6 by-election will see a straight fight between Harapan candidate Joohari Ariffin and Perikatan Nasional’s Abidin Ismail. The by-election was called after the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff on May 24 due to stomach inflammation.

The campaign period ends at 11.59pm on July 5.
