RS-1 includes plans to tackle population surge — MB

By Fitri Hazim Hazam

TASEK GELUGOR, July 1 — The First Selangor Plan (RS-1) launched two years ago contains a comprehensive development strategy to address the growing state population resulting from high migration.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said with Selangor’s population reaching seven million, RS-1 was designed with a clear direction to systematically manage the state.

“In 2008, Selangor’s population was 4.8 million, before growing to 6.8 million in 2020, and now reaching seven million, due to the high migration.

“However, if we measure based on the birth rate, there (would have been) only 1.9 million people as of 2018.

“The government cannot remain passive in the face of a high influx of residents by keeping existing formulas and policies,” he said during the Jerayawara Siswa Kita Selangor programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here yesterday.

In his address to over 300 students from Selangor, Amirudin said RS-1 was launched to address challenges in maintaining Selangor’s status as a developed state, which it earned in 2005.

“The state government launched RS-1 in 2022, making us the first state to roll out its own development plan.

“Several projects under RS-1 will enhance the state, including the Integrated Development Region in South Selangor and the Sabak Bernam Development Area.”

During yesterday’s programme, Amirudin responded to questions from and views of the students about the state’s administrative direction.

The programme, which was organised by Persatuan Mahasiswa Anak Selangor, was attended by USM, Universiti Utara Malaysia, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis students.

The Menteri Besar handed over laptops contributed via a free loan scheme, as well as lucky draw prizes, including Selangor FC jerseys, gaming keyboards, headphones, gaming chairs, Samsung A55 smartphones and iPads.
