Selangor launches secretariat to boost effective student development

SHAH ALAM, July 3 — The state government has established the Selangor Student Development Secretariat to ensure better welfare and employability of university students.

Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the secretariat involves representatives from state government agencies and strategic entities from various backgrounds.

“Under the secretariat, elements such as student welfare, knowledge culture continuity, governance, graduate marketability, and the short-, medium- and long-term success of state programmes for students will be planned comprehensively,” he said in a social media post yesterday.

Amirudin said the secretariat’s establishment was inspired by various programmes that have already been activated by the state for Selangor university students.

This includes the Jerayawara Siswa Kita Selangor programme, previously known as the Jelajah Mahasiswa Kita Selangor.

The Menteri Besar said the programme, which has been held in Sabah and Penang this year, aims to extend the Kita Selangor initiative’s reach to Selangor students nationwide.

Another programme catered to Selangor students, said Amirudin, is the Selangor Middle East Student Convention, which was first introduced in 2019 under his administration.

The latest convention was held in October last year in Amman, Jordan.

“(With the secretariat’s formation), it is hoped Selangor’s student development programmes can be implemented more effectively, not just as one-off events.

“The key is the post-programme phase, which should provide greater opportunities for Selangor graduates to benefit from and contribute to the state.”

Amirudin said as the person responsible for the state education portfolio, initiatives that focus on student development will always be close to his heart.
