Shah Alam Stadium demolition begins to make way for new stadium

By Siti Rohaizah Zainal

SHAH ALAM, July 1 — The demolition of the Shah Alam Stadium begins today, and the process is expected to take a year, said Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI.

Its chief executive officer Saipolyazan M Yusop said the process uses two hydraulic breaker machines, a conventional method without explosives, to avoid disrupting residents with noise, dust, and water.

“Demolition work will last for a year and we expect the building’s roof to start being removed at the end of this month or in early August.

“Once the demolition reaches the halfway stage around October, the contractor will start ground work such as embankment to expedite the construction of the new stadium,” he said.

Saipolyazan was speaking to the press during his inspection of the demolition work at the stadium site today.

He added that MBI continuously monitors the process, and reports are sent monthly to ensure its implementation is in accordance with the set schedule.

“In addition, MBI urges all local authorities that need seats for their respective stadiums to apply to the project team.

“There are 86,000 seats in this stadium and the roof removal work will be carried out after all seats are removed. Each local authority can make use of the existing seats, and we will separate the damaged seats,” he said.

Previously, MBI said the Shah Alam Sports Complex’s development, which involves three phases, is expected to be fully completed by 2029.

Its special projects unit general manager Datuk Ruslan Abdul Aziz said the first phase involves the demolition and reconstruction of the Shah Alam Stadium, which is expected to be completed by December 2026.

The second phase is scheduled to begin in January 2027, involving an indoor theatre, sports and youth wing, and recreational areas.

The final phase, for the construction of an integrated terminal and hotel, is expected to start between January 2028 and December 2029.
