Sultan of Selangor’s Cup: Over half of available tickets sold

SEPANG, July 1 — More than 12,000 tickets have been sold for The Sultan of Selangor’s Cup (TSSC) in just a week since they went on sale on June 24.

TSSC chairman Tan Sri Abd Karim Munisar expects tickets to sell out by the time Selangor and Singapore meet for the prestigious cup at the Merdeka Stadium on August 17.

“Ticket sales are very encouraging. To date, 12,000 have been sold, more than half the 20,000 capacity of the stadium.

“Grandstand tickets are also in high demand. This year’s TSSC is highly anticipated as the match sees the return of the nostalgic rivalry at the Merdeka Stadium,” he said after attending an event to promote the match at Sepang Municipal Council here today.

This is the first time the TSSC will be held at the iconic Merdeka Stadium. In the past, the match was either hosted at the Shah Alam Stadium or the Singapore National Stadium.

The annual friendly football match, which was first held in 2001, is making a comeback this year after a three-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The last time it was held was in 2019, when the Selangor Selection defeated the Singapore Selection 1-0.

Karim said tickets are being sold at RM10 and RM30, adding that the TSSC jersey can be purchased at Restoran Uncle K at SACC Mall or Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur.

He advised fans to use public transport to travel to the venue, with operations extended to 12.30am on match day.

TSSC, the brainchild of Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, was introduced to strengthen ties between the Selangor Football Association and Singapore and to rekindle their rivalry after Singapore pulled out of the Malaysian League in 1994.

The rivalry between the teams has always been intense due to their status as the two most successful clubs in Malaysian football history.

The Selangor Selection has won the cup nine times, while the Singapore Selection has been victorious on seven occasions.

The 2004 edition was declared a draw, while the match in 2015 was cancelled due to haze.
