Zakat distribution: Anwar heeds Sultan of Selangor’s decree

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 7 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has heeded the decree of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, stating that zakat aid is only meant to be distributed among Muslims.

Anwar said his statement on the need for zakat institutions to be reformed by extending assistance to non-Muslims was a personal view.

“It is my view that this matter be studied, examined by the mufti and religious council, and decided upon. That’s just my point. If the decision is to disagree (with the suggestion), it’s fine,” the Port Dickson MP told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

The Selangor Sultan’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani was previously reported as saying that Sultan Sharafuddin had decreed that only eight groups of Muslims in need including ‘muallaf’ (those who recently embraced Islam) could receive zakat assistance.

According to Mohamad Munir, Sultan Sharafuddin had received advice from Selangor Mufti Datuk Mohd Tamyes Abdul Wahid on the matter.
