Police confirm death in custody of accused at Kajang lock-up

KUALA LUMPUR April 14 — The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) confirmed that a local man died in custody at the lock-up of the Kajang police station near here, yesterday.

Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad said the 45 -year -old man had been charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and pleaded not guilty.

Since the detainee had no surety, he said, the accused was placed at the Kajang police station lockup before being sent to the Beranang Satellite Prison, near here.

“(However) on April 13 (yesterday) at 10.32am, a policeman on duty at the lockup was informed that the detainee had a seizure and contacted the hospital. A hospital team arrived at 10.45am and then took him to the hospital for further examination.

“While on the way to the hospital, the assistant medical officer confirmed that the accused died and the cause of death is still unknown,” Azri said in a statement today.

He said the case would be investigated by the department’s death in the custody investigation unit.
