SHAH ALAM, OCT 31: Allocation for the free Smart Selangor Bus service was increased by RM10 million to RM20 million for 2017.
Dato’ Menteri Besar, Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the increase was made after the addition of new routes involving all local authorities in Selangor.
“The State Government is happy to provide the free Smart Selangor Bus service to the rakyat. Since its launch in 2015, the service has operated in 11 local authorities with a passenger capacity of 2.8 million as of August 31.
“The initiative that started with a RM3.5 million allocation in 2015 was increased to RM10 million this year. The service is to encourage the use of public transport by all layers of society and is capable of reducing our carbon footprint.
“To fulfil the demand of public transport users, the State Government has suggested that the allocation for free Smart Selangor Bus service is increased from RM10 million to RM20 million for 2017,” he said while tabling the 2017 Selangor Budget at the Selangor State Legislative Assembly on October 31.
The implementation of the Smart Selangor Bus service has previously provided a positive impact on Selangor citizens as it is a dominant and efficient public transport system.
The implementation has carried more than 911,969 passengers throughout the entire state since its launch.
Mohamed Azmin said that the Smart Selangor Bus service was created to reduce the use of private vehicles as a method to lower the state’s carbon footprint, in line with the ‘Green State’ concept.
The service offers more choices for the public to use public transport besides other existing services such as Light Rail Transit, Komuter, Monorail and taxis as ways to reduce traffic congestion.
