SHAH ALAM, Dec 15 — Athletes from Selangor who contributed medals to the country in the recent 2019 SEA Games will be rewarded for their outstanding performance at the biennial Games, Bernama reported today.

Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said today that the state government will be rewarding the athletes between RM3,000 to RM5,000 in the middle of January 2020.

He said the incentive is allocated by the state administration through the Selangor Sports Council (MSNS).

“The state government has decided about four years ago to reward any athletes from Selangor who have contributed gold medals in any international sports event such as the Olympics, Asian Games or the SEA Games.

“This is a show of support towards the athletes. Out of the 56 gold medals won by the national contingents, 26 were contributed by athletes from Selangor,” he told reporters at the launch of ‘Sweat and Shoot: Sports Without Discrimination’ programme, organised by Kumpulan Karangkraf, here today.

Malaysia fielded a total of 773 athletes in 52 out of 56 sports at the Philippines SEA Games and had won 56 gold, 58 silver, and 71 bronze medals.

Out of the total medals won, Selangor athletes have also contributed 12 silver and 17 bronze medals.

Yesterday, Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had expressed his pride over the success of the Selangor athletes who contributed the most medals to the country in the Games.

His Royal Highness hoped the achievement at the SEA Games in the Philippines would continue to inspire officials, athlete and the MSNS.

Meanwhile, when asked on the privatisation of the Selangor football team, following its merger with PKNS FC, Amirudin said that the Red Giants would continue to represent the state.

“This is because 50 per cent of the share in the team belongs to the state government’s subsidiary companies, including the State Development Corporation of Selangor (PKNS). The Football Association of Selangor (FAS) also holds a portion of the share, while the remaining are individually owned.

“We will maintain the formula as it could push the Selangor team to next league through professional management and administration,” he said.
