China’s coronavirus death toll rises to 425, more than 20,400 infected

SHAH ALAM, Feb 4 — China’s health authorities announced on Tuesday that a total of 425 people have died from the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), with total confirmed cases of 20,438 as of Monday, the South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported today.

According to the country’s National Health Commission, 64 new deaths in the mainland were attributed to the disease with an additional 3,235 new confirmed cases.

In the Hubei province alone, which is the epicentre of the outbreak, a total of 414 coronavirus fatalities were recorded.

Meanwhile, Wuhan’s first makeshift military hospital, which was built to care for coronavirus patients, had started taking in its first batch of 50 patients on Tuesday morning.

“Constructed in eight days and formally handed over to military control on Sunday, the Huoshenshan hospital is being operated by a total of 1,400 army medical personnel.

“A second temporary hospital, Leishenshan, is also going up at top speed in the city and is expected to be operational on Wednesday,” the SCMP reported.
