Singapore reports 233 new Covid-19 cases, world tops 1.8 million

BEIJING, April 13 — The world is now in a battle against Covid-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions, reported Xinhua news agency.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s Ministry of Health reported 233 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 2,532, with 10 of them Malaysians.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 66 were linked to other cases while contact tracing was being done for the remaining 167 cases.

NEW YORK — Confirmed Covid-19 cases worldwide topped 1.8 million on Sunday morning US Eastern Time, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The fresh figure reached 1,800,791 with 110,052 deaths as of 11.50 am local time (1550 GMT), the CSSE said.

PARIS — As of Sunday, the number of people who have died from the coronavirus in France totalled 14,393, representing a one-day increase of 561, down from Saturday’s 643, while serious cases decreased for the fourth straight day.

Daily deaths recorded in hospitals rose by 315 to 9,253 compared with 345 recorded on Saturday and 554 on Friday. Deaths in nursing homes increased by 251 to 5,140 since the epidemic started on March 1, according to the data released by the Health Ministry.

CAPE TOWN — The Covid-19 pandemic has gripped a South African prison, infecting 23 officials and three inmates, authorities said on Sunday.

More cases are expected pending more results of mass testing at the East London Correctional Facility in Eastern Cape Province, according to the Department of Justice and Correctional Services.

LONDON — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson “has been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery at Chequers”, a Downing Street spokesman said Sunday.

“On the advice of his medical team, the PM will not be immediately returning to work. He wishes to thank everybody at St Thomas’ for the brilliant care he has received,” the spokesman said.

The death toll of those hospitalised in Britain who tested positive for the novel coronavirus reached 10,612 as of Saturday afternoon, the Department of Health and Social Care said Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Britain hit 84,279, said the department.
