Industrial Production Index grows 0.3 pct in Aug 2020

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 — The Industrial Production Index (IPI) recorded a positive growth of 0.3 per cent in August 2020 from an increase of 1.9 per cent in the same month of the previous year.

Chief statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the increase in IPI in August 2020 was driven by the positive growth of 2.4 per cent in manufacturing index after recording an increase of 2.9 per cent in July 2020.

“The major sub-sectors contributing to the growth in manufacturing sector in August 2020 were electrical and electronics products (6.9 per cent), transport equipment and other manufacturers (6.9 per cent) and food, beverages and tobacco (4.7 per cent),” he said in a statement, today.

However, Mohd Uzir said the mining and electricity index recorded a decrease of 6.7 per cent and 1.2 per cent, respectively, in August 2020 compared to the same period of the previous year.

“The deterioration in mining sector output was due to the decrease in crude oil and condensate index (-5.0 per cent) and natural gas index (-8.0 per cent).
