SHAH ALAM, Oct 10 — The International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti) has allowed a limited number of employees to work in the office in a guideline released today for the work from home directive in areas currently placed under the conditional movement control order (CMCO).

In a statement today, Senior Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said only a maximum of 10 per cent of the managerial or supervisory-level employees is allowed to be in the office with a restricted time limit.

“Taking into consideration the needs of the industry that require some of its employees at the management and supervisory levels to be present, Miti has agreed to a maximum of 10 per cent of the workers involved in accounting, finance, administration, legislation, planning, and ICT (information and communications technology) to be in the office for four hours from 10am to 2pm, thrice a week.

“These companies do not have to make a formal application. But the employers would have to issue letters of consent for the employees to travel to work during the CMCO,” the statement read.

Mohamed Azmin said a total of 776,135 the 1.3 million industrial sector workers are affected by the work from home directive beginning Thursday (October 22), in line with the decision made by the National Security Council (NSC) yesterday.

“The government will continue to cooperate with the private and industrial sectors in improving the enforcement of the work from home policy as a new norm, in line with the current advanced technology and online applications available,” he added.

Yesterday, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Yaakob had announced that public and private sector employees at management and supervisory levels in the CMCO areas, namely Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Sabah and Labuan, have been directed to work from home effective tomorrow.

He said this decision was reached at the NSC special session on the advice of the Health Ministry to restrict the movement of employees as part of efforts to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also said workers who reside in the red zone but are needed in the office will have to take a swab test, and if the employer contributes to the Social Security Organisation (Socso), then the costs will be borne by Socso.
