SHAH ALAM, Nov 18 — The Health Ministry (MOH) has increased bed capacity in hospitals and Covid-19 Quarantine and Low-risk Treatment Centres (PKRC) in the Klang Valley following the surge in Covid-19 cases.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the number of beds to treat Covid-19 patients had been increased to 4,739 compared to 345 on October 1.

“As of November 18, the total number of beds in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya has been increased 14 times more,” he said in a statement today.

Dr Noor Hisham said this includes 630 beds in Sungai Buloh Hospital, 831 beds in Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and converting the status of Cheras Rehabilitation Hospital to a Covid-19 hybrid hospital with 230 Covid-19 beds.

He said the MOH had also reopened eight blocks of the MOH Training Institute in Sungai Buloh with a capacity of 2,400 beds and will continue the use of the National Leprosy Control Center with a total of 648 beds. Both venues will operate as PKRC.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham had also announced the setting up of the Central Region Covid-19 Unified Command Centre.

He said the centre will be led by Selangor State Health Department director Dr Sha’ari Ngadiman and assisted by Sungai Buloh Hospital Emergency Specialist Dr Sarah Shaikh Abdul Karim as his deputy.

“The command centre will take lead on coordination and communication between all hospitals and agencies in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

“It is hoped that the strong cooperation of the MOH with other agencies as well as the establishment of this command centre will enable us to manage Covid-19 pandemic in the Klang Valley,” he said.
