Other states should follow Selangor’s SIM card initiative

SHAH ALAM, Feb 17 — The distribution of 40,000 SIM cards by the Selangor government to the underprivileged community should be emulated by other states in ensuring internet data coverage is provided to all.

Consumer Association of Subang and Shah Alam, Selangor (Cassa) president Datuk Dr Jacob George said the state government should conduct a thorough study to ensure that the group is entitled to receive the benefits.

“Cassa also proposes the establishment of an audit committee involving state government agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Selangor to evaluate the success of this programme.

“If all these recommendations are followed, Cassa is confident that the SIM card programme will become a success and an example to all states in helping the people, especially those in rural areas,” he told SelangorKini today.

On January 24, Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said a total of 40,000 Selangor SIM cards will be distributed to the rural community in March.

Amirudin said they are in the process of discussing with telecommunication companies on the internet packages before proceeding with the distribution process.

The assistance through the Rakan Digital initiative is limited to learning and business uses only.
