Malaysian Rugby to rename national rugby teams as “Bunga Raya”

KUALA LUMPUR, May 7 — Malaysian Rugby (MR) have agreed to carry out a rebranding of the national team as “Bunga Raya” (Hibiscus).

MR secretary-general Amrul Hazarin Hamidon, when contacted by Bernama, said the rebranding was decided at the executive council meeting to standardise the use of the rugby teams’ name as done by World Rugby.

“We want to standardise with the rebranding done by World Rugby. No more using women or men, so we want to be known by only one name.

“When we standardise all the teams’ names with one name, then the rebranding would be fixed. This is our strategy in facilitating the search for funds to sponsor our upcoming matches,” he said yesterday.

MR currently have three rugby teams, with the national 15s team known as “Bunga Raya”, the men’s 7s team called Rimau Sevens and the women’s 7s team known as Panthera Ladies. With the rebranding, all three teams will be known by the name “Bunga Raya”.

Amrul also said that MR would produce their own corporate identity after the Aidilfitri celebrations whereby the use of the MR logo will be used in accordance to the standard set.

Meanwhile, Amrul announced that the Bunga Raya 7s team are currently undergoing training in preparation for the Asia Rugby Sevens Series to be held in Incheon, South Korea in August.
