Covid-19: Malaysia records all-time high of 17,405 new cases

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — New Covid-19 cases in Malaysia hit another record high of 17,405 cases today, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

In a Twitter post, he said this brought the cumulative positive cases to 1,061,476 since the pandemic broke out in the country early last year.

The previous high of 17,045 new cases was recorded on July 25.

Selangor again topped the list in the last 24 hours with 7,171 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,880), Kedah (1,112), Sabah (913) and Negeri Sembilan (863).

Johor had 767 cases, Penang (760), Kelantan (532), Melaka (531), Terengganu (490), Sarawak (464), Pahang (429), Perak (406), Putrajaya (68), Labuan (16) and Perlis (three).

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement that 1,016 patients were still being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), with 529 requiring ventilators.

He said 12,373 cases had recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative figure for recoveries to 877,812.

He said 143 fatalities were reported today, raising the death toll to 8,551.

The deaths involved 123 Malaysians and 20 foreigners.

Dr Noor Hisham said 41 new clusters were detected, with 22 linked to workplaces, 16 in the community, two at detention centres and one at an educational institution.

He also said Malaysia registered an infectivity rate (Rt) of 1.14 yesterday, with Terengganu recording the highest among states at 1.30, followed by Kelantan (1.27), and Johor, Sabah, and Kedah each at 1.23.

All states had an Rt exceeding 1.0 except for Negeri Sembilan, Federal Territory of Labuan and Perlis.

Meanwhile, on the 17,405 new cases reported today, he said 374 cases (2.1 per cent) were in categories three, four and five, while 17,031 cases (97.9 per cent) were milder cases in categories one and two.

“Only 2,032 cases (11.7 per cent) of the total today had a history of Covid-19 vaccination,” he said.
