Covid-19: 22,597 new cases reported Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 28 — Malaysia on Saturday (August 28) reported 22,597 new Covid-19 infections, a slight increase to the 22,070 cases recorded yesterday.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said with the latest figure, the country’s cumulative Covid-19 cases now stood at 1,685,510.

Selangor remained the state with the highest number of daily new infections with 5,814 cases reported, followed by Sabah (2,834), Sarawak (2,427), Kedah (2,162) and Penang (1,920).

“A total of 1,896 new cases were reported in Johor, Kelantan (1,289), Kuala Lumpur (1,111), Perak (1,061), Terengganu (739), Pahang (579), Negeri Sembilan (345), Melaka (269), Perlis (98), Putrajaya (48) and Labuan (5),” he said in a Facebook posting today.

In his official statement, Dr Noor Hisham said that of the 22,597 new infections, 22,129 cases or 97.9 per cent were in categories 1 and 2 while 468 (2.1 per cent) were in categories 3, 4 and 5.

“In total, 17,345 (76.8 per cent) of the total cases reported today were those who were not or only partially vaccinated,” he said.

He said there were also 19,492 recoveries recorded, bringing the total number of recovered cases to more than 1.4 million, adding that there are now 268,548 active cases in the country.

He added that 986 patients are being treated in the intensive care unit (ICU), with 451 of them requiring respiratory support.

Meanwhile, Dr Noor Hisham said there were 252 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, involving 220 deaths in hospitals and 32 being brought-in-dead (BID) cases.

So far, the Ministry of Health (MOH) has detected 36 new clusters, with 23 at the workplace, 12 in the community and one linked to a high-risk group.
